Una  ‘verbena’  es una  fiesta popular con baile  que se celebra por la noche (normalmente al aire libre) con motivo de alguna festividad, siendo la que se realiza el 23 de junio,  víspera de   San Juan , una de las más famosas. El origen etimológico del término procede del latín  verbēna  y este era el nombre que se le daba a una planta herbácea que desde la antigüedad fue muy utilizada gracias a las virtudes curativas que aseguraban que tenía. Era una planta con la que se preparaban innumerables remedios y ungüentos para curar infinidad de dolencias y se usaba con asiduidad en numerosos rituales y ofrendas a las divinidades. A partir del siglo IV la decadencia del  Imperio Romano  hizo que la iglesia católica tomase el control de la mayor parte de ese tipo de celebraciones paganas, anulándolas y/o reconvirtiéndolas en fiestas religiosas, entre ellas el  ‘solsticio de verano’  que lo trasladó a la conocida  ‘Fiesta de San Juan’ . Cuando alguien dice o hace algo que consideramos que es erróneo, absurdo o ilógico solemos decir que ha dicho/hecho un  disparate . El origen de este término lo encontramos, una vez más, en el latín, que tanto ha enriquecido nuestro vocabulario aportando infinidad de palabras. Disparate procede de  disparātus  cuyo significado era separar y lanzar en direcciones diferentes. De ahí también parte el término ‘disparar’ , aplicado originalmente al acto de lanzar flechas tensando un arco . Y es de ese acto de  ‘disparar’  o  lanzar sin sentido ni lógica todo tipo de afirmaciones  de donde surgió el término  ‘disparatar’  y de ahí dio pie a ‘disparate’  que con el tiempo se ha convertido también en sinónimo de la palabra  chiste .
